Millwall Fire Station
Built in 1904, the old Millwall Fire Station is located on Westferry Road at the Southern end of the Isle of Dogs. Following the relocation of the London Fire & Emergency Planning Authority to a newly-built facility at nearby Byng Street in 2004, Swan has redeveloped the site to provide: 17 apartments for affordable rent, 13 apartments and 5 townhouses for shared ownership, 3 apartments for outright sale, and a restaurant/cafe unit on Westferry Road.
Designed by HLM Architects, the scheme integrates a striking new build block with the historic Queen Anne architecture of the main listed building. It has included the comprehensive restoration and conversion of the fire station and fireman cottages, both of which are Grade II listed.
The design quality of the scheme has been recognised with two awards:
* London Planning Awards 2009
Best New Place to Live: 'Finalist'
* Evening Standard New Homes Awards 2009
Best New Development in the Affordable Homes Sector: 'Special Commendation'
Grant-funding was provided by the Housing Corporation.
