International DayInternational Day Loving the difference

Celebrating different cultures, tasting different foods, hearing different music and seeing dancing from around the world is what International Day is all about. We had our second International Day for residents of Fryerns and Craylands in Basildon on 30th May.

There was a special performance from African dance group Frititi from London, line dancing, Bollywood dancing and even belly dancing. International Day is fantastic fun for people of all ages and everyone really got into the spirit, trying out some of the dance moves themselves!

Road shows, information & fun days

From time to time we will run road shows, information events and fun days on or close to an estate. These events are a two -way opportunity for us to show you our plans or ideas, and a chance for you to voice your own ideas or concerns.

Bring the whole family and join in the fun, while you find out what is happening in your local neighbourhood and let us know what you think of our services.

Information about these events can be found either on:

World Class Internet Cafe/Computer club opening soon in Craylands

Through Consultation with the young people at the youth club every Monday evening our finding shows that most household on the estate do not have a computer at home, however there is a high level of interest for young people to learn computing.

The positive feedback received from the young people and local community groups in the area support the need for internet café/computer club on the estate.

Ade Adelekan Community Development Officer for Swan submitted an application to Community Initiative Fund (Youth) on behalf of the Friends of Craylands for the Sum of £15,100 to develop an internet café/computer club on the estate, the application was successful and the grant was awarded on 12 November 2008.

The internet café /computer club will be developed on the estate in the Consultation Hall for the benefits of the Community including the local young people in the early part of 2009.

The internet café/ computer club will be a multi functional centre where the community will be able to use facilities for training and various activities.

The benefit of the internet café/ computer club will include the following:
• The club will enable young people to write their CVs and also search for Jobs
• Young people and Children can use the club to do their homework
• The club will also serve as a training centre for the community as there will be a qualified person on hand to deliver training on word processing, Excel etc
• The club will keep young people away from the streets and this will reduce crime and anti- social behaviour
• The club will be used as a regular meeting point for its diverse user groups and by learning together young people will get to know each other and this will help to promote community cohesion
