A month of excitement for children

Comminity MembersDuring the summer we ran an activities programme every day and over 40 children took part. There was a balance of educationalworkshops like computer skills, drug awareness and healthy eating and sports like football and swimming.

The children were really treated this year with trips out to the cinema and even Chessington World of Adventures. On the last day, the children received certificates for attending and many of them said it was even better this year than last year.

The programme gave the children a chance to develop their sports and social skills and to have fun. It also helped to tackle Anti-Social Behaviour by keeping them busy.

“It was a fantastic programme and I have learnt many things and made new friends. I enjoyed the activities every day and I look forward to joining the summer activities again next year”.

One of the children from Bow Cross The month long “Summer Activities" programme was run with Vallance Community Sports Association from 25th July to 19th August.

Estate football has never been so fun!Estate football has never been so fun!

Over 40 people excitedly watched eight teams go head-to-head in a competitive, but fun, 5-a-side football tournament officiated by coaches from West Ham Football Club. The 11-16 year olds came from across the Basildon area, but only one team could win. Noak Bridge Yellow won the final against Noak Bridge White by 2-0. Trophies were presented to the winning team and medals were given to all the players.

The idea of the tournament was to encourage better interaction amongst the young people and develop their football talents too. We organised and funded this years tournament and the young people enjoyed it so much we will definitely be doing it again next year!

CRAYLANDS Stubbers visitSense of adventure for local children

We took 40 young people from Laindon to Stubbers Adventure Centre, for a thrilling day of outdoor activities. Kayaking, open canoeing, climbing, challenge course, tunnelling and team building exercises, made for an exhausting but fun day in Upminster, Essex. Swan and SureStart wanted to engage the young people with something different from their usual day-to-day activities challenge them and allow them to show their talents.

Craylands Youth and Flying Pigs Youth Club were lucky enough to be given the chance to go on 22nd July 2009. Everyone enjoyed the day and are now looking forward to more trips like this.

Southend United Match Day ExprienceSouthend United Match Day Experience

Craylands football team enjoyed a match day experience at Southend football club on 22nd November 2008. Ade Adelekan, Community Development Officer for Swan took the team on a trip to watch Southend United Football Club v Oldham play live at Southend. The idea was to reward the team with a day to remember for their hard work and consistent training.

The day’s experience include a 2 hour coaching session organised by Southend football coaches which include a range of different skills, both individual and group orientated to improve teamwork and performance.

The team had the opportunity to go into the changing room, walk through the tunnel into the main field and also took some photograph of the changing room etc. It was a good experience for the team as most of them have not had the opportunity to watch Southend play live. They all enjoyed it and looking forward to more of this trip.

Colourful Summer 2007Colourful Summer 2007

Swan funded Tower Hamlets Youth League £6,500 to deliver a variety of exciting activities for children throughout the school holidays. This was to encourage them to play together and develop team working and sports skills. A programme of activities was developed which included football, bowling, cinema trips, rowing, drama and a trip to Alton Towers and Thorpe Park.

Over 80 children from all over Tower Hamlets joined in the fun and they all received an award for their involvement. We are delighted to say that feedback from parents and children was really positive and we have been asked to run further programmes for the children next year.

Well done to everyone...it was great fun!

Fantastic fun naming Craylands regenerationFantastic fun naming Craylands regeneration

Residents celebrated naming their estate regeneration at our brilliant fun day on Craylands estate, Basildon. The final results of the vote were announced at the relaunch bash, where there was face painting, a bouncy castle, balloon modelling, and much more. The renaming of their estate ‘Beechwood Village’, started by choosing a name for a new development next to Craylands, which marked the new beginning for the area.

As regeneration works progress, the new name will be rolled out across the whole of the Craylands estate! Over 56% of residents chose the name to change Craylands estate to ‘Beechwood Village’ after a series of consultation events in August and September.
