Benefits and Money Advice
Housing Benefit
If you are on a low income, you may be entitled to housing benefit that may pay all, or part of your rent, for you.
You will not get this automatically even if you are on other benefits. You must apply for Housing Benefit separately.
Claiming the right benefit is your responsibility. It is up to you to make your claim quickly and it is important to let the Housing Benefit Office know if your situation changes in any way.
Do not forget that you must pay any part of your rent that is not covered by Housing Benefit.

How can I find out how much I owe?
- Every month we will send you a rent statement. This statement will show how much rent we charged you and how much you have paid.
- You should always check your rent statement to make sure all the money you have paid has gone towards paying off what you owe, but remember that if you made a payment in the last few days, it may not yet have reached us, or show up on your latest statement. If you think there is a mistake on your statement, let us know straight away.
- If you want to know how much you owe at any other time ask your Housing Officer or view your rent account online.
Please note: Your housing benefit is paid to us every four weeks in arrears (from behind). This may mean your rent account still appears to be in arrears.
People across the UK are missing out on benefits and tax credits worth more than £10 billion a year. We can help make sure you get what is yours. Just use this simple calculator to work out how much you could claim.
