Our Chief Executive John Synnuck – A true Housing Hero!

John Synnuck

We're proud to announce that John Synnuck, Swan's Chief Executive, received the Lifetime Achievement Award at last night's national Housing Heroes Awards.

The judges praised him as an ambassador for the sector who has "taken housing into the next generation".

This award celebrates another achievement in John's significant career in social housing which has spanned 50 years. John is an exceptional leader, innovator and social champion. He started his career as a trainee in housing aged 18 in 1968 and this ignited his passion for the sector.

In 1994 he seized the opportunity to set up a new housing association in Basildon and Basildon Community HA, later Swan, was born. In 25 years, under John's leadership, Swan has grown to owning and managing almost 12,000 social and shared ownership homes with over 6,500 new homes in the pipeline.

John has recognised that Housing Associations need to be innovators and under his leadership, Swan continues to evolve and today leads the way in developing modern methods of construction, enabling the delivery of new, precision engineered homes, faster than ever before. Swan is also at the forefront of providing innovative care services, recognising the integral and often forgotten link between healthcare and housing. Swan Care and Support regularly demonstrates Swan is about more than bricks and mortar and helps to alleviate pressures on the NHS. The team provide several innovative services, including one which provides a support package enabling patients to be discharged to continue recovering at home.

John passionately believes that housing associations can change people's lives, but only if we continually listen to residents. We need to understand what drives them, what their priorities are and how Swan can make their lives better.

These two testimonials, which were used in support of the award submission, clearly explain why John is a winner:

I would like to thank John for giving our residents decent homes to live in. This has taken years of listening to residents as to what homes they would like to live in as a community."

Carol Franklin, Resident & Chair Swan Resident Consultative Committee

The sector has benefitted immensely from having John in it for the last 50 yrs. His absolute passion, tenacity and at times dogged determination has seen entire communities created, lives enhanced and individuals thrive. The Swan Group is an absolute testament to just part of what he's achieved over the years, and that's largely because of John's vision for it.  Having worked with John for the last 10 years, I can honestly say that he remains one of the most determined CEOs out there. He's a visionary, something which has shaped the sector for many years already, and something which will continue to shape it for years to come."
