Delivering effective services, enterprising solutions and exemplary homes and communities.
The STAR in the Community Awards held its 6th celebration last night, at the Atrium in Bethnal Green, London. The bi-annual ceremony recognises the positive impact social housing residents living in Tower Hamlets have on their neighbourhoods.
Swan partnered with nine other Housing Associations to coordinate the awards and are proud to announce that two Swan residents scooped awards:
Samantha received the 'Inspirational Resident' award for her tireless voluntary work for the Tower Hamlets 'No Place for Hate' campaign. She has been a Hate Crime champion since 2017 and has been involved in over 30 activities designed to raise awareness and understanding of Hate Crime in Tower Hamlets. In this time she has also successfully encouraged Barts Health to sign the organisational No Place for Hate pledge and delivered training on disability hate crime.
Tressa received a posthumous 'Special Recognition' award. This category is for individuals who have made a particularly big contribution to their community. Tressa was a much-loved member of the Bow Cross community; she chaired the Bow Cross Residents' Board and, for many years, played a major role in organising community days on the estate, bringing everyone together. She was also instrumental in setting up the thriving Bow Cross Youth Club which continues today.
The awards were hosted by Alison Inman, former President of the Chartered Institute of Housing. Alison is well-known for her commitment to social housing, fairness and social justice. Deputy Mayor Cllr. Islam honoured the winners by presenting them with their awards.
Alison Inman said:
'It's an inspirational evening to be amongst so many people who tirelessly volunteer their time to help and empower their communities. Their work undoubtedly improves both the communities and the environments in which they live. Events such as this are important as they celebrate the, often overlooked, value of social housing communities. These communities are important and so much good happens because of the selfless work of many individuals, some of whom we honoured tonight. There's lots we can learn about the positive power of community from tonight's winners."
Deputy Mayor Cllr. Islam said:
'It is a pleasure to celebrate the incredible achievements of Tower Hamlets residents. I would like to congratulate all of the nominees, finalists and winners who have been recognised tonight, and express my personal appreciation for your community spirit."
