Decorating your home on a budget
Tools, paint, wallpaper, furniture, flooring…decorating your home can be costly, but it doesn’t have to be! Whether you’ve recently moved in or your home simply needs a refresh, putting your own stamp on the place can be done more affordably with just a few clever decorating hacks. And you won’t need to call the professionals, you can do it yourself!
Need some DIY inspiration? Here’s our five top tips:
1. A lick of paint
Breathe new life into your home by giving the walls a fresh coat of paint – it’s an inexpensive way to completely transform a room. And don’t feel as though you need to stick to just one colour, try adding a feature wall or use different painting techniques such as stencilling or ombre.
2. Panelling
Want the panelling effect without the cost of buying wood and someone to fit it? It can be done…with wallpaper. Panel effect wallpaper delivers a similar result at a fraction of the cost and doesn’t take as long either. Double bonus!
3. Create your own art work
Rather than completely redecorating, spruce up the walls with some artwork. You could even create your own. You don’t need to be the next Picasso, simply pick up some free wallpaper samples from your local DIY store and frame them.
4. Head to your local boot sale
As the saying goes, ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’, so get yourself down to your local boot sale or charity shop to pick up a bargain. And if you are set on giving your home a complete makeover, why not sell your old home furnishings to help pay for some new ones.
5. Upcycle furniture
If you’re new to upcycling, start small by changing handles or painting on stencils. Once you’re feeling more confident, you could go all out by adding new doors or completely repurposing items into something completely different. Pallets into garden furniture, crates into shelving…the possibilities are endless!
